About The PMN
The People's Media Network (PMN) is a moderate network of media activists.
It was launched in 1992 out of the "International Exchange Meeting for people's media '91", which was held with 200 participants in Tokyo in December 1, 1991.
In those days, it was a surprise for most Japanese that citizens themselves were telecasting programs in the U.S.; furthermore the works for social change made by the citizens were rather more excellent than those by mass media.
Some people who were shocked at the fact got together, and held a meeting in Tokyo, inviting Ms.Cathey Scott of the Paper Tiger TV from NY. The meeting is the one mentioned above.
The PMN now has about 160 online members and is still growing.
The PMN serves as an information clearinghouse on areas such as the following:
* video activism
* video screening
* computer communication
* media literacy
* public access
* publishing
The PMN also uses publishing and communications resources to help media activists keep in touch with each other and help establish wider network among citizens. We believe that networking is one of the most effective way to strengthen the citizen's power.
The PMN's main goals are:
* to criticize the corrupt mass media and change them.
* to inspire and motivate people to take positive action against the
power that would isolate individuals.
* to provide practical support to media activists who are struggling to
express their ideas and feelings.
* to ask a large number of people for their advice for making citizen's
media.
